In this installment of our guide to holidays in Greece we look at Greece’s climate …

Greece has a normal Mediterranean climate in that it generally enjoys long warm summers and short mild winters. However, despite its relatively small size, its climate can be quite varied, with its northern mountainous areas, mainland, and southern islands having slightly different weather in the same seasons.

From April until November, all over Greece is hot and dry and enjoys near-constant sunshine. Sporadic rains do occur during the dry season, but they tend to be rare, quick showers. The most pleasant weather occurs in May-June and September-October, with the warmest time of the year being from mid-July and to mid-August. Temperatures average at around 35 degrees during this period and heatwaves can occur. If visiting at this time of year, it’s advisable to try and stay out of the sun from 11am-4pm when the suns rays are at their strongest.

The rest of the year is marked by a cool, rainy season that usually starts in November and lasts until late March or early April. The bulk of the rain falls from December to April, when it rains on about a third of the days in each month.  In northern Greece, this rain can be heavy enough to cause flooding and the winters are cold enough for snowfalls to be relatively common.

The summer months are the peak season and attract the most tourists but, for visitors from northerly climates, the off-season from November through February can be a rewarding time to see Greece, especially the southern Aegean and parts of the southeastern mainland, which are the driest parts of the country. It will not be beach weather, but temperatures are mild, prices are reduced, and the number of other tourists will be significantly fewer.

A China tourist visa is required of all U.S. citizens who would like to do tourism on the mainland. While the Chinese consular services offers several differnt types of visas, this article will provide information on how to apply for a China tourist visa.

The Chinese embassy and consulates no longer accept visa applications by mail. You have the choice of submitting the application personally or getting someone else to do it on your behalf. A family member, friend, travel agent or visa expediter can do this for you.

The validiy on a China visa can be either 3, 6 or 12 months. You can ask for a single, double or multiple entry visa. Visits to non-open cities require an additional travel permit. Visit the local security bureau in China to get this.

The China Tourist Visa

A China tourist visa, also known as an L visa, is usually valid for 30 days from the day of entry. When you arrive your travel documents will be looked at by an inspection agent. If everything is correct, they will be stamped with an entry seal. You have to submit a request at the local public security bureau if you decide to extend your stay in China.

A tourist visa limits your activity while in China to tourism and visits with family or friends. You need to request a Foreign Travel Permit at the local public security office if you would like to enter a restricted area.

Chinese Visa Requirements

The following items are required in order to obtain a tourist visa to China.

Declaration Form

The Declaration Form became effective in May of 2009 and is a requirement for all those who are applying for a Chinese visa. The form includes space for name, nationality, passport number and a list of countries or U.S. states you have visited in the two weeks before filling out the form.

Your Current US Passport

You are required to submit your current U.S. passport together with the tourist visa application. Your passport needs to have six months validity beyond your date that you arrive in China. A blank visa page in your passport in another requirements.

ONE (1) Passport-Style Photograph

The siize of the photo has to be 2×2 inches. It is recommended that you obtain the photo at a location that has experience with passport photos. The photo will only be accepted by the consulate if it is high resolution, clear, and provides proper contrast with white background.

Completed Chinese Visa Application

The China visa application has seven sections. The theme of the first section is person information. You need to provide your name, sex, nationality, date of birth, passport number, occupation and other such data. The second section is where you provide information about your trip to China. You have to submit the reason for your trip, the number of entries you want, when you plan to arrive in China and how long you plan to stay.

Questions about your health and prior travel are found in Section 3. You need to include information about previous trips to China. Your contact information should be given in the fourth section. This includes your home address, work or school address, address for contact in China, telephone numbers and email.

The fifth section is for additional declarations about your trip. The sixth section asks information about the person that completed the form if other than the person requesting the visa. You sign the application in seventh section.

How to Get Your China Tourist Visa Quickly

Regular processing of your visa to China can take 4 business days or more. Express and rush processing can be requested in you need to obtain your visa quickly. Express processing takes 2 to 3 business days. Rush processing can be done in only 1 business day. You will have to pay more if you want this expedited processing.

If you cannot get to the Chinese embassy or consulate general and you do not know anyone who can go in your place, then you need to apply through a private visa expediting service. The expediting service will deliver your visa application in your place. This allows you to get your China visa expedited as quickly as the same day.

Greece isn’t renowned for its shopping, but it does offer some unique and quality local products. Special purchases include lace, jewelry, metalwork, pottery, knitwear, rugs, leather goods, local wines and spirits, and local handicrafts.

Nearly all Greek cities have large international-style shopping malls with well recognized brands and retailers. But prices are similar to those in other parts of Europe, so you won’t find any real bargains unless sales are underway.

Tourist souvenir shops and some family-owned arts and crafts stores tolerate haggling, but otherwise it is frowned upon. In places where bargaining is accepted, you can reduce the price by at least 10-20%, and being able to speak some Greek can help you get price as low as possible.

Value Added Tax (VAT) is charged on most goods. This is normally included in price tags, but be alert for the rare exceptions. In some shops, non-EU residents can make tax-free purchases by asking for a VAT voucher when buying a product. If such vouchers and the relevant items are shown to a customs officer when the traveler is leaving the EU, a VAT refund can be provided.

The official currency is the Euro, and other currencies will not be accepted, but you can easily exchange money in the larger cities and in any tourist destination. Banks usually offer the most favorable exchange rates and automated currency exchange machines tend to offer the worst rates; specialist shops are somewhere in between. When changing money, try to get mostly smaller notes – nothing over a €50 – as many businesses are averse to accepting larger denominations.

ATM machines are widespread. Most shops, hotels, and travel agencies accept Mastercard, Visa and Eurocard, but some local souvenir shops and restaurants won’t accept these cards.

With many duties the Mounties established a strong force and a strong name for themselves. Today the Mounties are still a well established force and respected throughout Canada, they are very much a large piece of Canada’s history. “We always catch our man”, this was the Motto that the Mounties were very famous for, they were well known for being able to catch anyone they hunted.
